The CHS football team has always put their best into every game. While the season has not gone as well as the team would like, there is still plenty to be proud and to build on.
Losses and injuries caused Head Coach Craig Williams to periodically change goals throughout the season. Williams says, ”We continue to be the best CHS team we can be. Week by week things have to change due to injury and the growth of each player.” With tonight’s homecoming contest being the last home game of the 2022 season, the team wants to play spoiler in their final two games to district opponents.
As the season progressed, the group had to keep themselves motivated and try their absolute best. Williams maintained “It is about playing for each other. We have always aid that we play for the name of the front of the jersey and not the one on the back of the jersey.”
While a losing season isn’t a favorable outcome, the tough stretch has revealed some of the team’s better qualities. Williams states, “This team works hard in the face of adversity and poor odds. The personalities of this group have made it fun to coach this team.”
The Discoverers also need to rely on strong leaders to keep it going. Senior Liam Blaser is one of these strong leaders. Williams said of his captain, “Liam Blaser is a leader both on and off the field. He has been a star for us for the last three years. The junior class also brings some powerful leaders as well. “Carter Fedde has been Mr. Reliable. Playing O-line and D-line; he is tough and athletic.”
“Isaiah Kibalya has been a nice surprise for us. He is really growing as running back and as a football player. Caden Kapels has been a steady presence on both sides of the ball. He will be important to us moving forward.” Williams also found surprise in the sophomore class of players this year. Due to injury, these boys had to catch up quickly and thrived under pressure.
All in all, while the season did not go as planned, it’s certainly not a bust. The Discoverers have one more chance to win at home and two more chances to increase their win total on the year. Tonight’s homecoming contest should be a good one, so grab your coats, gloves and caps and pack Pawnee Park’s Memorial Stadium for the last time in 2022!!
