For those kind-hearted souls who have so much love to give that they need somewhere to put it, Key Club should definitely be on your radar. Key Club is a student-led, high school organization that assists Kiwanis in their mission to serve the children of the world and allows the bettering of the world through their services.
Even though Key Club might be an odd name for a club, there is a reason behind it. The club gets its name from a man named Albert Olney. In 1925, Albert and Frank Vincent established the first Key Club. The first club was made up of students who were willing to serve their school and community. They referred to these students as the “keys” to the school, thus resulting in the almost 100-year tradition of the Key Club.
Over the years, Key Club has had plenty of years to gain a decent following. Last year, there were 71 official members of the club. In addition to these 71 members, there were approximately 100 students who attended the meetings being held throughout the year.
While there is a plethora of amazing clubs to join available for students at CHS, you will not find a club with the same togetherness as in Key Club. Apart from the invigorating sense of joy that can only be experienced by helping others in one’s community, there are some other perks of joining this club. Some of these advantages include fun activities during meetings and opportunities to get involved with the community.
Members of this club will also continue to grow as individuals and flourish as leaders due to answering the call to lead, mustering up the courage to engage and developing the heart to serve. Another added perk of this club is if you are a senior member, you can apply for national scholarships for college.
According to Ms Soltys, the most rewarding parts of the club are the interactions with students at monthly meetings and watching students take charge of various situations. “There are lots of opportunities to become a leader in Key Club and many students take advantage of these opportunities,” states Ms Soltys.
Meetings are usually held on the second Thursday of each month either before or after school. The meetings before school begin at 7:40 a.m. and go until roughly 8:00 a.m. The meetings after school begin at 3:45 p.m and generally end at 4:05 p.m.
For you good-natured folks with hearts of gold, come join this club and spread that love. Anyone who wants to help their community will fit right in inside the heart of this group, almost like a key fits inside a lock. Huh, Crazy how that works. Not only would you be giving to your community in this club, you would also be giving and spreading joy along with love for yourself.
So come on down and join this club before October 20. At that time, admissions go on lockdown and throw away the key until next year!
