Here at CHS, volleyball is one of numerous sports doing very well so far this season. As of right now, the team under the leadership of coach Jeri Otten is 9-6, winning two out of every three contests.
One of several accomplishments the volleyball team can boast is performing extremely well in their overnight invitational tournament at Bellevue East. Out of the 6 games, they only lost one against Millard South. Throughout the 5 games they won, the Discoverers took consecutive sets against Omaha Central, Syracuse, Omaha Buena Vista, Bellevue West, and Lincoln High.
Coach Otten says that having a young team comes with many highs and lows. However, despite having less experience than the other competitors, they placed 3rd in the Bellevue Invitational, and played well against some very challenging teams. She says that knowing that they had less experience, the team focused more on the process of getting better so they could reach favorable results. The strategy has paid off thus far.
The goals they have set for themselves as a team are to win and play to the best of their ability, no matter the circumstances. Coach Otten says that the team has reached this goal, battling through highs and lows and persevering throughout their games.
At the midway point in the season, Coach Otten only mentioned one setback - their game against Kearny. She says that day the team struggled to piece everything together and get on the same page. However, they ended up learning from each other and winning the next game against Lincoln Northwest days later.
Besides that, the volleyball team also has significant upcoming events which you don’t want to miss. Next month they compete in the HAC Tournament from the 17 to the 20 of October, and they are using all this time to prepare. Not only are they training hard for this tournament, but districts come shortly thereafter. There are also a few upcoming games against Hastings on September 27 and Lincoln Northeast on October 4.
Needless to say, our CHS volleyball team is working hard to make this season a great success. They are performing to the best of their ability and are hoping to earn some hardware for the trophy case by season’s end. They strive for greatness and have accomplished a lot so far, so let's cheer them on at their next game!
