For the rest of this season, the Columbus Discoverers football team will be looking to dominate each contest. While the opening week 0 game really set the tone for the season with a nail biting win against the Fremont Tigers, a 38-7 loss to Maroon Cup rival Norfolk proved that the Discoverers have more work to do.
The team certainly has a strong crew of players to lead them this year. Captains include seniors Liam Blaser, Adoriyan Daniels, Santos Gonzales, and junior Carter Fedde. This group will be instrumental in pulling the team’s various position groups together to create team wins and, hopefully, a deep playoff run this season.
During the game against Fremont, both teams delivered a touchdown in each of the first three quarters. After the Discoverers found paydirt in the fourth, the game came down to a goalline stand, with Columbus denying the Tigers a tying score. The game ended with a final score of 28-21.
This game really showed how tough this team can play. Head Coach Craig Williams said, “It showed that we can play and win a very physical game. We were not always in control of that football game verse Fremont, but the kids kept pushing through and won the fourth quarter. We found out that we have some kids that can make some big plays with the game on the line.“
The team overall has several goals this year. Williams states, “This team hopes to make a 3rd straight playoff appearance this year” finishing within the top have of the Heartland Athletic Conference. Williams also explains, “ We have kids that are eager to have the opportunity to show what they can do after waiting their turn the last year or so. Like any season, fans will find new favorite players to watch and they have good kids and good players to pick from this year.”
The Discoverers will be in action tonight at home against Lincoln Southwest. After that, CHS won’t be at home again until September 23. Road contests include a playoff rematch against North Platte and a trip to perennial powerhouse Millard South.
