The Columbus Discoverers varsity volleyball team is off to a great start this season with wins against both York and Fremont. Coach Jeri Otten predicts that the team will finish in the top half of the HAC at the end of the season.
After the first game, Otten and her players are excited for their potential and can’t wait to grow as a team. They are pumped to demonstrate the results of some intense practices, and are eager to put opposing teams away by any means necessary. Practices have been going well for them, and they have a very competitive JV squad that helps to push the varsity. Otten says that will not only help them out this season, but for many seasons to come.
Coach’s Expectations: The expectations for this year's team are very high. Even though they have a lot of young starters, Otten is determined to get the team to play beyond any imaginary limitations. She stated, “We have high expectations for each of the 12 players currently on the roster to be contributors to the success of the varsity team. Each of these individuals bring something positive and tangible to our team.”
Athlete’s To Watch: Player’s Ellie Thompson, Addi Johnson, and Carly Gaedeke all bring varsity experience with them to the team. Otten stated, “They are active leaders for the entire team - freshman through varsity, vocally as well as statistically.”
Hopes For This Season: Coach Otten is very hopeful for this season. She said, “Each year, you get a new personality with a team dependent upon our new seniors. It's one of the most exciting parts of the season as they grow and develop this. With this year's particular group of seniors, I'm excited to see how they lead these younger players and pull out whatever they can from their teammates to be successful.” Otten is most hopeful that the new seniors will be able to coach and lead the new players and the rest of the team, and lead them to a successful, winning season.
