Golf has taken the shape of some of the most successful athletes in the world. It takes patience, perseverance and grit and you can find exactly that in Columbus High School’s Girls Varsity Golf team.
The team has already led a few events but keep your eyes peeled for these next ones. Some of those events include the Grand Island invite on Friday, September 2, the LSW invite on Thursday, September 8, and the Norfolk invite Thursday, September 15. The Heartland Athletic Conference (HAC) will take place in Norfolk Thursday, September 29.
Coach Anne Robertson states that the intent for the season includes, “all players work to become bogey or better golfers. Some have already reached that goal, and now are working to break 80. As a team, the goal is to score better than 360 as a team, and work towards breaking 340 as a team." Coach Robertson also goes on to say the team is working towards a top 5 finish in the conference.
Despite a team of exceptional players, there are a few competitors who stand out. Sarah Lasso, for example, is a senior on the varsity team who has reeled in many accomplishments. When asked what being on the team means to her, she responds, “Being on a team is really important to me, even though golf is an individual sport, you need the support of your team to succeed, to improve, and to earn points that will allow you to qualify for state."
Lasso has medaled at state 3 times and hopes to do so again this time around. Despite lofty goals, Lasso remains down to earth. “Golf is a very humbling sport where you have to take every victory as unique and never assume it will come easy next time."
All in all, the girl’s team is on pace for a successful season. Hitting the links in Lasso’s shadow are the eager Jersey Odgaard and Molly Goc, who hope to learn a lot from their senior leader before taking over the program next season. Coach Robertson and all CHS Girls Golf enthusiasts are excited to see what this year brings, and look forward to celebrating lots of accomplishments this season.
