The girl’s soccer team is having a great start to the season here at CHS! So far, Coach Wayman says that the team has been very enthusiastic and supportive of each other. They are growing stronger as a team as they practice together and compete in games.
According to Coach Wayman, they started 3-0, and are now 6-2, he says that they are seeing improvement rapidly as the season progresses. It was a good start since they still have 8 upcoming games before they have the chance to play in the post-season. Their goals for the season are to be a unified and connected team and to improve in each game; this way they can have an opportunity to compete at State in Omaha. They have already beaten Lakeview and Scotus from Columbus, as well as Grand Island.
Although the season started not too long ago, there have been some unfortunate injuries. However, the team refuses to see this as a setback. Instead, they look on the bright side and see this as an opportunity to give other players a chance to step up, improve their game and make the team even stronger when they reach the end of the season.
This year the girl's soccer team has several rivals to face off against, including Kearney, Lincoln Southwest, Lincoln Southeast, and Lincoln East. Although several of these teams prove themselves as great competition, Coach Wayman states that "We have always said that our greatest competition is ourselves, and the standards we are aiming for is to reach our full potential." He also says that in the end, no game is more important than any other because each game ends in a win or a loss.
However, our team captains give it their all no matter what the outcome is, win or lose, they lead the team the best they can. This year’s team captains are all seniors: goalie Addison Heule, defender Kaylee Gerber, forward Alyssa Zwingman, and defender Emma Zwingman. The leading goal scorers so far are senior Addison Kudron with four goals and Abby Haynes, a freshman, with 5 goals. Altogether, they have a talented and hard-working team with a lot of skill and enthusiasm. The team has a strong experienced defense and a vigilant goalie who has 4 shutouts out of 8 games.
All in all, the girl's soccer team has clearly had a spectacular start to the season this year. They are a strong and determined team that has the potential to make it to districts and State. Let's cheer on the girl's soccer team to victory as they continue on their road to success here at CHS!
