With the track season starting, boys coach Scott Bethune anticipates lots of success for this year’s squad.
Coach Bethune stated many of the 65 competitors this season are young and promising athletes. While many of those young athletes are sophomores and freshmen, this year’s upperclassmen promise to be competitive in their respective events with several state qualifiers returning for another year of competition.
As far as athletes taking another shot at the state track meet, Caleb Mulder and Byron Arevalo will once again likely anchor a 4x100m relay team. In the field events, Santos Gonzalez looks to return to the state meet for throwing while fellow senior Carson Marking will propel himself inter the upper echelon of pole vault competitors.
Bethune says there are new athletes this season, and many of those students have the potential to do well in future meets. Carter Fedde, Heath Dahlke, Jaden McFarland and Dylan Crumley are all sophomores who show promising skills. Cooper Buxton and Eric Alarcon are both freshmen, and Bethune feels they have what it takes to go beyond at a varsity level.
To maximize the team’s potential, Bethune goes on to state that each coach has their own training routine for their areas which focuses on the needs of the athlete at the time. Coach Bethune says that each year is different because with each season, new athletes join the team and those that return tend to perform better than they did in the past. With a team this large and a season this young, Bethune feels very confident in every athletes’ abilities.
In the first track meet, Columbus placed 3rd out of the 8 teams assembled. Coach Bethune is most looking forward to the Columbus Invite, the HAC Invite, Districts, and State.
