There are many clubs and organizations at school and many of them are greatly underappreciated. However, one of the most overlooked is Student Council.
This club tries to host at least one event per month from September to March for the student body. However, because the members get to vote on these events, they vary from year to year. Some events this year included the Homecoming Pep Rally, Ironman Volleyball, decorating Christmas cookies with the Cassette House students, the Winter Informal dance, and even hosting a movie night in the gym.
The next event that they have in store for the excitement pursuers out there is another movie night on March 10, 2022. If you are in for a thrilling adventure, they will be showing “Jumanji; The Next Level.” Movie tickets will cost $3, and a canned food item earns you a $1 discount. The purpose of this event is not only to relax and enjoy yourself, but also to donate items to help those in need. At the first event, the StuCo team was able to donate 60 items to the Columbus Mission, and they aspire to achieve a similar donation like this one.
On average, the whole group meets once a month. The peer-selected Leadership Team meets with Mrs. Wallin and Mrs. McDonald an additional time after the group meeting. The purpose of this team is to help create the whole meeting agenda so Mrs. Wallin and Mrs. McDonald can present it to the rest of the group as well as to serve as student-leaders for StuCo’s many events.
What is perhaps most impressive is that this group does most of its work with fewer than fifty members. They are so dedicated that they begin the application process early on in April just so they have time to meet with their new members. This group is working 11 months out of the year, (even when school has been let out for summer) and deserves tons of credit for all their behind-the-scenes efforts.
All in all, Student Council is rightfully proud of its work. Mrs. Wallin said, “Mrs. McDonald and I are so proud of our council members and all the things they have accomplished.” Everyone deserves to be acknowledged, so if you’re one of the individuals who cheered at the Homecoming Pep Rally, played Ironman Volleyball, or tried to win prizes at the Winter Informal, be sure to find a Student Council member and thank them for their efforts!
