COVID Protocols at Columbus High
Olivya Thege and Carla Gardea
Recently, new COVID protocols have been established at Columbus High School. Due to the increase in COVID cases, students, staff and guests are required to wear a mask during the school day and at activities.
On January 18, 2022, the administration announced that starting January 19, 2022, students at CHS, CMS, and North Park need to wear a mask over their nose and mouth. They also announced that Columbus Public Schools will reduce the school days for students by providing teachers with work time on Fridays through February 4.
Now, there are some consequences if you refuse to wear your mask properly. Refusal to wear your mask may result in office referrals as well as adding minutes to your detention time. Masks may not be pleasing to wear, but it is very important. Many other students would love to enjoy sports activities, dances, clubs, etc. If you choose to wear your mask incorrectly, then schools might have to escalate protocols. Last year when COVID was at its peak, students were still required to wear a mask as well as take assigned seats at lunch. Although this year we were allowed to start the school year without a mask mandate and assigned lunch seats, a blatant disregard for the mask protocol has the potential to make the current COVID situation even worse.
Overall, being part of this tragic time of COVID and all its variants may be terrible, but it is essential to wear your mask (that isn’t torn apart) and to social distance. I believe as a student, it would be amazing if we could all go back to normal and have fun at dances and other activities, but to get to that point, we have to handle the current situation responsibly.
