After a long two years of silence brought on by the pandemic, the Discoverer tennis team is back and better than ever. The team is very excited to be back in action and is proving it by producing great successes in their duals this year. In this article, the veteran coach of the Discoverers, Dave Licari, senior player Kenzie Kallweit, and underclassmen Sarah Lasso each give their thoughts about the start of the season and their hopes for the year.
Coach Licari is very proud of how his players have been playing so far. He is so grateful to be back coaching tennis and watching his players have fun and grow. Coach Licari's overall goal for the season is to win at least five dual matches. This goal seems very attainable as the girls are off to a hot start of 3-0 in the duals against Lincoln Northeast, Norfolk, and Grand Island. The girls placed 3rd at an invitational hosted by York. Coach Licari believes that much of this early success is due to the leadership of his seniors some of which include Addi Duranski, Becca Hazlett, McKenzie Kallweit, and Miranda Swanson.
One of the seniors, McKenzie Kallweit, strongly believes that the team’s goals and her goals for her final year of tennis as a Discoverer are very achievable. She, like coach Licari, believes the season is off to a great start. McKenzie was pleasantly surprised when, after a missed season, all the girls jumped back into their skills and had some really good practices. Her goals for the season are to continue improving her skills and becoming more accurate with her shots. Not only is she excited to improve her skills, but she is also excited to get to know the other girls on the team better.
Sarah Lasso, one of the underclassmen on the team, has many hopes and aspirations for this season. She believes that her season has been both challenging and rewarding. Although she has encountered some rough patches this season she believes she has still contributed positively to the team. Sarah’s main goal for this season was to make varsity and she was very happy when she accomplished it. She wants to become more aggressive with her play style. She is very excited to learn from the great upperclassmen leaders.
Both the JV and Varsity Tennis squads have exciting duals coming up. The JV girls have a dual on April 20th against the Fremont Tigers. They have another exciting matchup against the Norfolk Panthers on April 22nd. Meanwhile, the varsity girls will travel to Lincoln on April 19th to compete against multiple schools in an invitational. The varsity squad will also compete in a home invitational on April 23rd. Please come out to support our tennis Discoverers and cheer them on to victory.
