It is officially prom season! Columbus High School’s prom is going to be held on Saturday, April 17th. Prom is one of the biggest events in high school, and this year we are not messing around. Since prom 2020 was canceled, CHS is determined to make prom 2021 a night to remember.
To get an inside scoop of what this year’s prom might look like, I interviewed a member of the prom committee, Hannah Kwapnioski. Kwapnioski told us that prom will be held in the main gym at Columbus High School. The dance is planned to run from 9:00 PM to 12:00 AM. That gives you three hours to bust out your best moves, but make the best of it because time flies when you’re having fun. If one of your worries is the spread of COVID, CHS’s Prom Committee is already a step ahead. When asked about COVID safety, Kwapnioski replied, “When it comes to being COVID safe, masks will be required. And the hope is that since it is going to be in the big gym people can be more spread out.” Everyone has been so curious as to what this year’s theme is, but the Prom Committee is staying tight-lipped. When asked what the theme is, Kwapnioski would not budge. “The theme for prom is a secret.” That is all she was willing to give us.
Last year’s juniors were not given a prom due to COVID; however, the story is different for this year’s 11th graders. We wanted to see the perspective of a CHS Junior who is attending prom. When asked how she feels about attending her first prom, Elizabeth Svatora said that she is very excited. One of the main focuses on prom is the wardrobe. Many people spend quite a lot of time trying to find the perfect dress for a night to remember. When asked what she is most excited about, Svatora told us, “I am most excited about getting dressed up and hanging out with friends!” As I previously mentioned, finding out the theme of prom is very thrilling for CHS students. Svatora has no clue what the theme could be, however, she thinks it would be neat if it was an Arabian Nights theme.
And finally, for Seniors, their prom is a final, bittersweet dance - a last hoorah before graduation. When asked how he feels to be having a prom this year, Mason Dahlke replied, “I am very happy we are having prom this year especially because we have had to miss out on so much this year.” Senior Mallory Comley feels similar. She is very excited about her senior prom and anticipates it will be a good one.
Upon the conclusion of the dance, Post prom will give students a chance to win some prizes and hang out with their peers. Post prom lasts until 4 AM, so you have plenty of time to go all out. Dahlke is most excited for post-prom and looking forward to continuing his night there. The seniors took a shot at guessing the theme. Dahlke said it would be quite ironic if it was a masquerade. Comley said she had no idea, but she hopes that the Prom Committee went all out!
If you are planning to attend prom be sure your minutes are under 180 and all your fines are paid. Bust out your dancing shoes and get your best attire because prom 2021 is looking to be one for the books!
