Although paying your streaming service to watch a new release seems redundant and unnecessary, there is actually a good reason for it. Streaming services need reimbursement for making new movies so accessible and easy for you to watch. Alongside that, companies need to make money off of their new releases in order to be able to fund the next big hits, not to mention the low fees are incredibly reasonable. I believe that companies are kind in offering you the chance to watch the newest releases on your streaming service.
I believe that streaming services are being generous to their subscribers. They could have left new releases out of the streaming service altogether, but they made opportunities available. The streaming service caters to you, making the movie available at home. Now you do not have to go to the movie theater, pay for overpriced concessions, have to walk across sticky floors just to sit in a freezing room to try and enjoy a movie. An even bigger problem streaming services are helping us avoid is the ubiquitous cell phone going off and ruining the movie magic. No more! Now you are able to watch a new release from the comfort of your home for only a small fee. Not only do big-time companies need a way to bring more money in, but making it available to customers at home can also save those customers money.
Movies are extremely expensive to make, and companies make most of their money back in box office sales. If it is available for anyone on the streaming service to watch, they lose millions of dollars. If everyone who has the streaming service invites over two friends to watch the movie, two people that would have bought tickets are now watching it essentially for free. According to statistica.com, 95 million people worldwide pay for Disney+. If everyone who owns the streaming service let’s two friends piggy-back off their streaming service, that is 190 million people watching the newest movie for free. 190 million tickets that the company lost out on. In theory, if every ticket is $7, the company just lost $1.3 billion.
I also believe that the prices are reasonable. For Disney+, it is only $30 in addition with the $7 monthly cost. If the subscriber has their two friends each kick in $10, it is similar to the cost of going to see the movie. You can also watch it as many times as you want, so you can definitely make your money back. For example, I went to theatres to watch Frozen II five times at $7 per ticket. If I had the option of paying a $30 fee on Disney+ instead, I would have saved $5. That is not even including the three friends and family members I took to the theatre each time.
Along with that, the movies are incredibly portable! Not only do you have the option to watch from the comfort of your home, you also have the opportunity to take the movie wherever you wish. Disney+ alone is available on TVs, Xboxes, Rokus, web browsers and cell phones. If you feel as though you do not have enough time at home to make back your premier fee, you can take the movie with you. You can watch it while riding as a passenger on a long car ride, or turn it on in order to quiet a younger sibling at an important event. You can bring it out to a party, and watch the newest movie with friends, while you are all masked of course. You could never have access to a new release through a few pushes of buttons on your phone before; streaming services have been more than kind, offering out their new releases for sale on their service.
If you are still not compelled to purchase the new release, no worries. Most services make it available on the regular movie list after a few months. They understand that not everyone wants to willingly pay an extra fee, no matter how fair it is, in order to watch the hottest releases. So streaming services cater to its subscribers once again by ensuring the film is put on the service as soon as it would be available on DVD. Not only does it become available to regular subscribers after a few months, the Disney+ releases, Cruella and Black Widow, will also be available to watch in the cold, sticky, uncomfortable theaters.
Even though paying a streaming service that you already pay sounds ridiculous at first, there is a good reason for it. Not only does it help enable companies to continue making movies through the money they get, but it is also more convenient for you as the subscriber. So next time a movie comes out on Disney premier, pay the fee, grab a couple friends and snuggle in to watch the movie from the comfort of your home.
