Alright Swifties! There are officially fewer than 14 days until the release of “Fearless (Taylor’s Version).” Here is the rundown of the release of “Fearless (Taylor’s Version)” and the future of the re-recordings.
On February eleventh, Taylor Swift announced that “Fearless (Taylor’s Version)” would soon be released, featuring the original 20 songs from the first “Fearless” and six previously unreleased songs. Swift stated, “I've decided to add songs from the vault, which are songs that almost made the original “Fearless” album, but I've now gone back and recorded those so that everyone will be able to hear not only songs that made the album, but the songs that almost made it: the full picture." The unreleased songs are Swift originals, composed sometime between the ages of 13 and 16. That night, Swift released the new album’s version of “Love Story” just in time for Valentine’s Day.
A few hours after the announcement of the new album, Swift posted a thank you letter on her instagram timeline. Hidden in the thank you was the release date of the new album. The seemingly random capital letters spelled out “APRIL NINTH.” The release date is of significance to Swifties as the date, the ninth day of the fourth month, added up to Swift’s lucky number, 13.
Symbolism is not a new concept for Swifties. On March 19, Swift posted a picture of her, the three Haim sisters, and two pizza boxes, which equals six. The next day, she posted a picture of her and the four contributors to her “Folklore” album on Grammy night, precipitating a major event to fans in pictures of ever-diminishing numbers. One of the days was actually hidden on Selena Gomez’s instagram. On March 24, Swift posted two pictures announcing that she would be releasing the first song from the vault on midnight of March 25. The release was the much-anticipated “You All Over Me”, featuring Maren Morris on backup vocals. A week or so before this amazing announcement, Taylor Swift announced that she would be re-releasing “Wildest Dreams (Taylor’s Version)” to accompany the release of “Spirit Untamed” in June 2021. This is leading fans to believe that “1989 (Taylor’s Version)” will be released next, but that has yet to be confirmed.
This album’s release has been long-awaited by Swift’s fans. Back in August 2019, Swift announced that she was going to re-record her first six albums. However, before she could do so, she had to claim ownership of the albums. When Swift first signed with Big Machine Label Group in 2006, she did not have ownership of her music. In 2020, Scooter Braun sold Taylor’s music to Shamrock Holding. Later that month, Swift was able to acquire the rights to her music and could officially re-record her first albums. Swift wanted fans to hear an older, more maturely voiced Taylor singing songs they haven’t heard Taylor sing in years, not to mention supporting Swift directly instead of Big Machine and Scooter Braun.
When asked why Swift prioritized “Fearless” above other early albums, Swift explained that, “I always gravitated towards Fearless because I think that, as an album, it was a real coming-of-age, and...it fills me with such pride; it was an album about hope, lessons learned, and the effervescence of teenage youth. What more fun than to go back and explore that?” Many Swifties believe that she chose “Fearless” due to its initial release thirteen years ago, when it sat at number one for 11 weeks, and later won Album of the Year honors.
The album will be released on April 9 at midnight eastern time. You can purchase it on April ninth from Target or pre-order it on the Taylor Swift website and Amazon.
