With the Discoverer Swim team’s season coming to a close, the focus on the season has turned from the fundamentals to the necessary preparations for conference, and state.
Recent meets have demonstrated that this year’s squad has great prospects for state. Currently the team has 11 individual events and all three girls relays qualified with secondary times. Josue Mendez also recorded an automatic time in his 100 breast at the South Sioux meet on January 9. Coach Alyssa Dillon says that this was the team’s best meet, as they qualified the 200 medley relay, got some individuals to qualify and over 30 personal records.
Just like any coach, Dillon wants to keep her team safe and healthy. “I know at times I may seem strict about the COVID protocols, but my goal was to have a full and safe season - and so far we have done that.” The team has yet to experience a COVID related shutdown.
The Discoverer swimmers have two major meets left, and Coach Dillon has two goals in mind. Since it is the Discoverers first year competing in HAC, Dillon would like to make a good impression at conference. Compared to GNAC, HAC has a lot more teams involved, and the Discoverers are ready for some good competition. Dillon would also like to finish out her second season as the Discoverer swim teams head coach with a relay or an individual on the podium at State. She believes that Mendez has a good chance at delivering on that goal.
Tonight the team will be honoring the seniors at the last home dual of the season. February 12 and 13 is the conference meet and state is February 26 and 27!
