Let’s start with a definition of a vaccine. To put it simply, they are weakened or dead virus cells. They teach our immune system to recognize and fight given pathogens, viruses, etc. It takes a long time to prepare a vaccine - more than ten years in some cases. Scientists need to make a lot of studies and tests to make sure that vaccines are safe and have little to none side effects. If they don’t do it correctly, it may be dangerous for human health.
The coronavirus vaccine is especially controversial because it is supposed to be made in less or around a year. Certain people in the government still try to make it available this year, even claiming it would be ready before the election day. Scientists say it is not possible and not safe to release it this year, because they need more time to ensure it’s safety and efficiency.
These arguments make people unsure if they should even take the vaccine as soon as it comes out. In the polls by CNN conducted in May 2020, 66% people said they would get vaccinated at a low cost, but in October 2020 only 51% people said they would get vaccinated at a low cost. People want to make sure that the vaccine is safe to take. Unfortunately politics collided with science in the process of developing a vaccine as important as a vaccine against Covid-19.
