Ask Dr. Wolverine

How do I stay on-task during virtual learning days? It is recommended that you silence your phone and try to stay away from distractions. Wear a headset or headphones so you can block any external noise from your home. Keep your camera on so that your teacher can see you. Dress for success everyday and wake up fifteen minutes before the start of class so you can tidy yourself and be fresh for the day in front of you. Pay attention in class and start your homework as soon as possible when classes end. Try to limit your screen time by remaining focused.

What should I do if I do not understand a topic in class? Email your instructor. They are there to help you. Ask them to clarify what confuses you. Some teachers will hold extra-help sessions on Wednesdays on your request. Success is possible if you keep trying. You can also bring the topic up during class and ask them to explain it again.

What will AP Exams be like this year? Online or in-person? As of now, CollegeBoard expects APs to return to in-school testing. Last year, there were many issues with submitting assessments online and an outpour of outrage from students and parents over the at-home testing. We expect to have a vaccine distributed by the start of Spring, so we can be hopeful that AP Exams will be administered at school.

Do masks work? Yes, they do work. Coupled with social distancing, masks are the best thing you can do to protect yourself from COVID-19 at this time. Surgical masks are especially effective since the holes between their fabrics are small enough to prevent pathogens from entering the mouth area or nose area. We have all seen videos of water being able to permeate the mask. This has nothing to do with its effectiveness. Masks are a simple barrier to prevent respiratory droplets. There should not be an argument on whether to wear them or not. Studies have proven that they massively reduce the spray of droplets when worn properly over both the nose and mouth.
