TESLA TO GO FULL ROBOT
As part of an effort to automate their vehicle production facilities, Tesla has announced plans to acquire Germany’s Grohmann Engineering. Acquisition of Grohmann will allow Tesla to directly manufacture the tools needed to robotize the majority of their production lines. Though the announcement made no mention of job security for individuals currently working Tesla assembly lines, it did stress that the acquisition of Grohmann will create 1,000 new skill-based positions in Germany. Tesla’s announcement explained, “as the machine that builds the machine, our factories are so important that we believe they will ultimately deserve…more attention in engineering than what they produce.” Tesla’s acquisition announcement comes shortly after CEO Elon Musk commented that future, multi-industry job automation may call for the establishment of a “universal basic income” for workers.

NUCLEAR DIAMOND BATTERIES CAN OUTLAST EVERYTHING
British scientists from the University of Bristol have announced the development of a new battery capable of powering devices for time periods that could outlast human civilization. These diamond-based power units are built using radioactive carbon-14 molecules collected from areas of nuclear power plants where live reactions occur. Carbon-14 molecules can be used to create diamonds, from which beta particles (given off by radioactive atoms) can escape. This release process emits electrons, which generates electricity. To prevent radioactivity from escaping the diamond itself, a secondary, non-Carbon-14 diamond overlayer is applied. Diamond-power is seen as an ideal solution for low-power, extended-use devices, like satellites, drones, satellites or modular spacecraft.

DRIVERTRIBE IS SOCIAL NETWORK FOR GEARHEADS
In conjunction with British web series The Grand Tour, Richard Hammond, Jeremy Clarkson and James May (all of TopGear.com), have unveiled DRIVETRIBE, an interactive social media platform and app for gearheads worldwide. Clarkson bills DRIVETRIBE as a groundbreaking online mecca for auto enthusiasts, explaining that while various social media platforms offer endless memes and insignificant friend updates, “there’s never been a one-stop-shop for people who like cars.” Drivetribe is accessed via Facebook, where members are given the choice to join one of six "Tribes”, each containing a different array of custom automotive content. Users can then comment on, repost or favorite this content, lending the platform a slightly competitive feel reminiscent of Twitter or Reddit.

VOICE EDITING IS HERE. BE VERY AFRAID.
Software giant Adobe has publically demoed its new VoCo audio editor, a speech-shaping tool that is already being referred to as a Photoshop for voice. VoCo allows users to easily edit recorded speech, seamlessly alter what is being said, and even create entirely new spoken sentences. VoCo (short for Voice Conversion) works by analyzing phenomes (sounds that comprise a spoken language) within example speech audio to build a vocal model of the speaker. After analysis, the original spoken words are then displayed onscreen, where users have the option to rearrange, delete or add new words. Should VoCo’s development continue as projected, it is expected to be integrated into Adobe’s Audition audio-editing software within one to two years.

KENDALL JENNER TO LAUNCH WIRELESS HEADPHONES
Black Eyed Peas member Will.i.am has joined forces with Kendall Jenner and Naomi Campbell to launch Buttons, a new, fashion-centric brand of Bluetooth wireless headphones. Buttons earbuds are covered by large, magnetized circular metal surfaces reminiscent of earrings, that when not in use, connect to form what resembles a necklace. Buttons also feature a more subtle ear-attach system than competitors like Beats’ Powerbeats, three sizes of in-ear housings to ensure custom fit, and a six to eight hour battery capacity. As a former equity holder in Beats, the portable audio powerhouse founded by Jimmy Iovine and Dr. Dre, Will.i.am is no newcomer to personal sound tech. Buttons are currently available at the Apple Store and online.
