John Tyler by Lexus Wilt

"It was hard graft all the way and a good result in the end," John Tyler said. (John Tyler quotes)  John Tyler was the tenth president of the United States. I bet you didn't know he died a traitor to the United States however! Even though many people viewed him as a traitor he was able to accomplish many great things for this nation. If you're interested in finding out some more cool facts about this president you can go give his grandchildren a visit! They're still living! Because of Tyler's hard work and effort he will be remembered forever.

John Tyler was born on March 29, 1790 in Charles City County, Virginia. His parents were John Tyler Sr. and Mary Armistead Tyler. Tyler’s dad owned a tobacco plantation tended to by dozens of slaves. His dad also served as a judge in the U.S. Circuit Court in Richmond. Mary, John’s mother, died from a stroke when John was just seven years old. John spent most of his childhood helping out on the plantation. He had many siblings including Elizabeth Armistead Tyler, Martha Jefferson Tyler, Wat Henry Tyler, Maria Henry Tyler, William Tyler, Anne Contesse Tyler, and Christianna Booth Tyler. At the young age of 12, Tyler entered the College Of William and Mary Preparatory School and chose to study law. He graduated in 1807 at the age of 17. After attending college he was admitted to the bar in 1809 and he began working for a prominent law firm in Richmond. His father became the governor of Virginia that year and at the age of 21 Tyler used his father’s contacts to gain a position in the Virginia House of Delegates. Once Tyler’s father passed he inherited many properties and slaves. John served as military captain in the War of 1812. He was elected to the House of Representatives and gained influence during his time in the House from 1816-1821. John married Letitia Christian (1790-1842) on March 29, 1813. She passed and he married Julia Gardiner (1830-1889) on June 26,1844. Tyler's children included Mary, Robert, John, Letitia, Elizabeth Anne Contesse, Alice, Tazewell, David Gardiner, John Alexander, Julia Gardiner, Lachlan, Lyon Gardiner, Robert Fitzwalter and Pearl.

Tyler served two terms of office. From April 4, 1841- March 4,1845 John was the tenth president. There was no vice president during his time. He was preceded by William Henry Harrison and succeeded by James K. Polk. Just before his presidency John served as the 10th vice president from March 4, 1841- April 4, 1841. The president during this time was William Henry Harrison. Tyler was preceded by Richard Mentor Johnson and succeeded by George Dallas. Tyler's political party affiliation was both Whig and Democratic. John was able to accomplish many great things during his presidency. He was the first Vice President to succeed to presidency. John made Florida part of the Union. He approved the annexation of Texas. Tyler signed the Treaty of Wanghin in 1844 which gained access to ports in China. John was able to make peace with China. He also became president without a party. Britain and ourselves were in a dispute for Maine. President Tyler was able to settle this dispute by making the Webster- Ashburton Treaty. He also enacted positive legislation, such as the Log Cabin Bill. The first telegraph was completed between Washington D.C and Baltimore during his time. I believe that John's parents had a great influence on him. Because his mom died when he was little, John probably felt the need to do something great to honor her. Sr. John Tyler was involved in the government which had an impact on John Tyler Jr. John was able to use his father's position to also help him gain a position in the Virginia House of Delegates. After his father died he gained a plethora of properties and slaves. President John Tyler most likely wanted to accomplish as much as he could during his life to pay respect to his parents for all that they did for him.

John Tyler achieved a lot throughout his years in office. Even after his presidency he still fought for what he believed was right. Once Tyler left the office he returned to the Virginia plantation. He renamed the plantation Sherwood Forest in reference to Robin Hood to signify that he had been outlawed by the Whig party. He gave many speeches. One notable speech was held at the monument and was directed to Henry Clay. On the eve of The Civil War John entered public life as a sponsor and Chairman of the Virginia Peace Convention in Washington, D.C. which took place in February of 1861. As many predicted, the war broke out between the southern states. Tyler was sent as a delegate to the Provisional Confederate Congress. He was elected to the Confederate House of Representatives. He left for the confederate capital, Richmond, but he died just before the opening session. He passed on January 18, 1862 at the Greenway Estate in Richmond Virginia. President Tyler was 71 years old. He was believed to have suffered from a stroke. Tyler was buried in Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond. President John Tyler will be remembered for everything he was able to accomplish not only during his presidency but also after his presidency.

President John Tyler was indelible. He was admirable, ambitious, and brave. John had many successes during his life that he will be known for forever. During his last day in the office the presidency's first veto override took place. This didn't bring much joy to the president but it was extremely important in establishing the critical system of inter-branch checks and balances. This act showed John's selflessness. Tyler's real legacy as we know it would be the Tyler Precedent, the tradition by which Vice Presidents assumed the power of the presidency upon the death of a president. President John Tyler's nickname, The Accidental President, fit him honestly. All of Tyler's bounteous achievements will have an impact on the world forever.
