There’s a Snake In My (Garden) Boot

Title : There’s a Snake In My (Garden) Boot

Medium: Ink

Technique : Stippling

This piece was created by Caitlin O’Toole and I wanted to create a spin on the famous quote, "There's a snake in my boot", from Pixar's Toy Story. Instead, the scene shows an actual garden snake in a common gardening boot. This piece takes a famous mantra and hides it in a realistic composition. This piece is organized using principles of design including: balance, contrast, movement, and unity. The balance within the piece is found with the balance between light and dark. There is a direct contrast in the space of the foreground and the lightness in the backdrop. There is movement created with the snake as it arises out of the boot. Last, there is unity in this piece as the same technique of stippling was used throughout. The elements of design were used with form, value, shape, and texture. The form and shapes of the boots, snake, and shovel were created using 2-Dimensional forms. The use of value created texture on the boots and snake and then the value created dimension in the two-dimensional forms. This piece took several weeks to create and it was very tedious. Starting with basic design sketches first, and then moving on to the final composition takes a lot of measuring also.

I teach CHS TV Production, Honors English 12 and English 12.
