Often seen in the art vo-tech studio poring over a pottery wheel, senior Tara Sayles is a talented art student of Delaware Valley.
Tara has taken advantage of the many art courses offered at DV, from painting to jewelry design.
Her favorite medium to work with is ceramics. She always prefers working with her hands rather than with brushes or a pencil. Whether it be clay or steel, Tara creates beautiful pieces. Some are showcased here in the halls of DV.
She began her interest in ceramics during sophomore year. Mrs. Tricia Kaylor recommended that she work with the material. Tara blossomed quickly; her art was showcased at the Artery in Milford and submitted to the Scholastics Arts Competition.
Tara’s work also won her a scholarship to the Peters Valley, an open workshop for artists of 3-D mediums. There, she enjoyed enriching ceramics classes.
Certainly, Mrs. Kaylor has had the biggest impact on Tara’s artistic growth. Mrs. Kaylor has known Tara for a long time and noticed how connected she was to her art.
“What I enjoy most about working with Tara is her inquisitive nature. She is always open to new ideas and incorporating them into her art,” Mrs. Kaylor said.
Tara is now challenging herself in the intensive AP Studio Art course. There, students work over the course of the year to create a professional portfolio of their art. Currently, she is working on a vase.
“Tara is enthusiastically exploring the sculptural and functional applications of clay, building upon the solid skills acquired in Ceramics 1 and 2,” said Mrs. Christine Sweeney.
Along with the demands of school, she shines on the volleyball court.
“It all keeps me busy, I’m always doing something,” Tara said.
Tara has plans for higher education in art. She hopes to attend the New Paltz State University of New York. There she wishes to enroll in the Bachelor of Fine Arts program.
