The boys’ soccer team defeated the Hazelton Area Cougars 2-1 on Nov. 5 in a thrilling overtime game, winning DV the District 2 title for the 2016 season.
In the district championship game, the Cougars had a 1-0 lead at the end of the first half. Knowing that this was the final game of the season, the Warriors stepped up their game play and dominated the second half. Senior Abrar Shamim began pushing up the offense from the start, resulting in senior Jan-Erich Sacken scoring the first goal for DV.
The Warriors continued to play to their best ability, not allowing the Cougars to capitalize on offense. When the time on the clock ran out, the score was 1-1, resulting in sudden death overtime to determine a winner.
With six minutes left in overtime, senior Trevor Martin scored the final goal, allowing the Warriors to win the District 2 title.
Earlier that week the Warriors lost to Williamsport 1-0, which resulted in DV not moving on to the State playoffs.
