The Pennsylvania Farm Show is a time for agriculture in our state to be displayed to the masses. Many people go to enjoy the seeing the animals or to get a famous milkshake. I went to the Farm Show this year to receive an award for attending the FFA national convention. My name is Ethan Jamison, and I am a nationally recognized extemporaneous speaker in the FFA. Extemporaneous speaking is an event in which you give a speech on literally any topic in agriculture. I randomly chose a topic to perform a speech on. At nationals, I gave speeches on the disadvantage of not having internet, and how farmers and ranchers can maintain a leg up above other countries. These speeches gave me a national silver emblem and a ranking of somewhere between fifth and sixteenth in the nation.
At the Farm Show I received an award for my performance at nationals from our state secretary of agriculture Russel Reading. I spoke with Mr. Reading about the future of ag in PA, and how great FFA is for everyone involved. Receiving awards are always a great way to represent your school and community in a positive way. I also had an interview with our local representative John Hershey. He interviewed me about my accomplishments and future plans. Getting FFA to new people and informing people on how great the opportunities are, is truly amazing. Everyone should become involved in agriculture. If you are in school, please take an agricultural class to become involved in PA’s biggest industry.
