On Nov. 2, the Chicago Cubs defeated the Cleveland Indians 8-7 in the final game of the World Series. The last time the Cubs won the World Series was 1908, 108 years ago.
The game went into 10 innings and was delayed by one 17 minute rain delay. In the top of the tenth, Ben Zobrist hit a needed double to take the lead.
While the Cubs were playing, Wayne Williams a 68-year-old retired customer trainer was listening to to the game on his smartphone.
He was listening to the game in the cemetery where his father was buried, keeping his pledge that he made with his father. They made the promise to watch the game together when the Cubs got in the World Series again.
His father Wayne Williams was a Navy veteran who died at the age 53 from cancer.
Williams knew on Sunday night if the Cubs kept their title hopes alive he would have to make the trip to the cemetery.
Williams said,"If they win tomorrow, I have to be heading out the next morning," noting that his wife "supported it fully."
On Monday morning Williams made the trip from Fuquay-Varina, N.C. to his hometown in Greenwood, Indiana. William’s 10 hour trip was a little difficult because of the unlit streets.
He watched the whole game, wearing his Joe Maddon replica jersey and supporting the team he had grown up rooting for with his dad.
Williams had a Cubs "W" flag draped on his fold-out chair, said his celebration was subdued.
"I just kind of said `We did it,' like I had anything to do with it," he said. "I know how much he would have enjoyed it,” Williams said.
