Lin-Manuel Miranda, the composer and leading man of the show, takes viewers behind the scenes and tells the story of how “Hamilton” came to be in PBS’s documentary “Hamilton’s America.”
Before a Broadway musical was a thought, Miranda started with a single song about Hamilton’s early life before coming to America. The White House contacted him and asked if he had anything about the American experience to share at an event they were hosting. Miranda performed the song that would eventually become the opening number of “Hamilton” for President Barack Obama, his wife Michelle Obama and many more attendees at the White House.
“I knew that ‘Hamilton’ was going to change my life, but I didn't anticipate how much we’d help Hamilton’s legacy in turn,” Miranda said.
Miranda worked with many contributors, including director Thomas Kail, music director Alex Lacamoire and choreographer Andy Blankenbuehler for six years before “Hamilton’s” opening night.
“What’s amazing about our team is we’re finishing each other’s sentences all the time,” said Blankenbuehler. “What Lin writes and Alex arranges works for me choreographically.”
There are various historical experts featured in the documentary discussing Hamilton’s life and the impact he has had on the United States, and how Miranda incorporated everything into the show.
Miranda and the rest of the cast put in great amounts of research on their characters’ real life counterparts, visiting many historical sites about the historical figures pertaining to the musical.
