Pittsburgh Penguins' defenseman Justin Schultz underwent successful surgery to repair a fracture in his lower left leg after suffering the injury Saturday night in Montreal.
Schultz' skate was caught in the ice during a collision with Canadiens' center Tomas Plekanec causing his leg to buckle and his body to tumble down on top of it. He laid on the ice for a few minutes before he was helped to his feet and down the runway to the locker room.
Schultz has seen a lot of success since being traded to Pittsburgh in 2016 winning two straight Stanley Cups and setting a career high in points in the 2017-18 season with 51. Through four games this year, Schultz has four assists and has a +1 plus/minus rating.
The Penguins looking forward til at least February without Schultz are lucky to have started the year with eight defensemen on the NHL roster. Jusso Riikola will likely be inserted into the lineup for the time being having played the last two games.
