My all time favorite cartoon growing up was Avatar the Last Air-bender. I seriously thought for a good portion of my childhood that I could fire-bend and I have never loved a cartoon/anime more. If you have never heard of Avatar The Last Air-bender, it centers around a world where some individuals can control one of the four main elements: water, earth, fire and air, and one person, the Avatar, can control all of them. This cartoon follows the story of the avatar Aang and his friends who try to save the world from the evil Fire-lord Ozai, a dictatorial leader who has taken over the other elemental nations. The show is more than just a cartoon for kids, it has extremely deep messages and deals with mature content that, peppered with smart humor, made even my dad be an avid fan.
If you are a true fan of Avatar the Last Air-bender, you know how god awful the movie was...so bad that talking about it is like talking about fight club, you don't talk about fight club! But low and behold: a comeback! On September 18th, Netflix announced that they will be doing a live action remake of the series with co-creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko signed on to over see the show. Finally, the series can be remade how fans always envisioned it. And if it wasn't exciting enough that we will finally experience the world of Avatar, the cast is going to include actors of color who are going to accurately portray the characters we grew up loving.
As of right now, Netflix has not made a statement about the release date or cast list. Let's cross our fingers that this live action show is all of our childhood dream come true, and not another failure we still cringe at years later.
