The Humanitarian Club and the Girl Up Club were recently added to the expansive list of clubs hosted at Delaware Valley, promoting new ways to educate students on global crises.
Humanitarian Club
Originally a small idea proposed by juniors Esther Lee and Brian Lee, the Humanitarian Club is helping to raise awareness of global issues. In the club they discuss global topics, such as providing clean water to countries that do not have it. They create informational posters, and utilize bulletin boards around the school to share their message. The club not only raises awareness in the school, but also in the community as well. Their goal for this year is to raise money to help provide countries with clean water and to donate to the charity “Liberty for North Korea.” This charity provides shelter for refugees hoping to flee the oppression in North Korea and escape to a better life.
“Often we take things for granted because clean water is provided to us, but there are other countries around the world where people are forced to walk for miles to find clean water,” said club president Esther Lee.
Advised by 11/12 guidance counselor Molly Blaut, the club meets every other Wednesday each month. With fall sports ending, the club hopes attendance will increase and students begin to educate themselves on what is happening in the world around them.
Girl Up Club
The Girl Up Club was introduced alongside the Humanitarian Club and raises awareness of global issues as well. The club is more focused on the education of women across the world, rather than the environmental side of global issues. Studies conducted by the Brookings Institute, show that it is difficult for women to have an education in most countries, and if they want it, they would need to travel to great lengths to find it.
“We are trying to expand the club toward the quality of life for women,” said junior Lauren Pearl.
The club hopes to start a fundraiser called “School Cycle,” to provide women with bicycles so travel is easier and more efficient, when they venture out to find education.
In the month of November, the club is raising awareness toward domestic violence, sexual assault and other serious crimes, as they team up with the local Safe Haven in Milford. In addition to educating those in school, the club hopes to also educate the community.
