Video games are all fun and games until four teenagers are sucked into one, where the only way to escape, is to finish the game. “Jumanji” is not the typical video game to just play, but one must play to survive.
The original “Jumanji” movie was released on Dec. 15, 1995 and the sequel was released on Dec. 20, 2017. Both movies are action packed, comedies and similar in various ways.
Four high school kids discover a video game console and decide to play, when they were all stuck in detention together. Next thing they know, they are sucked into the game as the characters they chose and they then appear in a jungle setting of the game. The characters realize that they must survive and complete the game in order to get out of it. To complete the game, they must go on a wild and dangerous adventure. They have to retrieve the gem, place it in the jaguar statue and scream out “Jumanji!” As in any video game, each game member comes with their own personal strengths and weaknesses. Each avatar only receives three lives, which they learn quickly throughout the game. They must work to not only keep themselves alive, but their friends as well if they all want to make it out of the game. Along the way, the teens learn to accept themselves and accept each other.
As excited as I was to hear that a new “Jumanji” movie was out in theaters, it far exceeded my expectations. The plot kept my fullest interest throughout the entire movie. One of the main reasons is because of the cast members. I think the people who played each part did an outstanding job connecting to their character. The film had a dramatic, action-filled plot. Thanks to actors Kevin Hart and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, the film also had a comedic side to some scenes. I was impressed by the jungle setting and each scene was filled with excitement.
There are multiple positive themes in this movie such as selflessness, teamwork and communication. These elements make the movie even more of a family-friendly film, despite a few inappropriate references.
Overall, I highly recommend this movie to anyone who wants a good laugh and to anyone who loves “The Rock.” This movie will keep your full attention and is definitely worth the watch.
