Do you believe in mermaids? If so, “Siren,” a new supernatural thriller airing on Freeform may be a great addition to your Thursday nights.
In the small coastal town of Bristol Cove, Washington, nothing is of the ordinary. It was founded 150 years ago by Captain Charles H. Pownall and is now coined “The Mermaid Capital of the World.” The town is known for its legend that it had at one time been home to mermaids.
Myths and legends say that mermaids have gathered in Bristol Cove for hundreds of years and are known for their attacks on passing ships and sailors. Horror stories told by various sailors who have made it through the area haunt any sailor who dares to pass through the mermaid territory.
One night at sea, local fishermen of Bristol Cove capture a strange mythical creature that happened to be caught in their net. Upon their arrival back in town, the local military shows up and confiscates the mysterious creature without any questions asked.
Soon after the creature was taken by the military, a scare at a local beach had made the town’s citizens uneasy. A shark head popped up at the surface of the water, with no body and bite marks that were unfamiliar and unrecognizable by local marine biologists.
The series goes on to show the town’s leading marine biologists Ben (Alex Roe) and Maddie (Fola Evans-Akingbola) investigating all that they can to try to find out what mysterious creature could be lurking in the surrounding waters.
The plot thickens as Ryn (Eline Powell) comes to town one day. She can barely speak any English and seems confused by the actions and daily routines of the townspeople. As she wanders around the town, she seems to be intrigued by all of the pictures of mermaids seen all around. As her language skills develop, Ben and Maddie begin to understand who she is and what exactly she is doing in town. Powell does an outstanding job of capturing the curiosity and strangeness of her character Ryn in the series.
The show airs on Thursday evenings at 8p.m. on Freeform and will keep you interested and itching for answers to all of your questions. It is definitely worth the watch.
