It is with pleasure that I introduce to you the Student of the Month for March, Mr. Logan Ortiz. Logan’s currently maintaining an unweighted GPA of 98.7755 and a weighted GPA of 102.7143. He can potentially graduate in June with more than 40 college credits. He’s a busy young man both in and out of school. Throughout high school, Logan’s been an active member of student government, National Honor Society, Tri-M Honor Society, National Foreign Language Honor Society, captain of the Mock Trial Team, President of the Video Club, and captain of the golf team. Outside of school, Logan’s a member associate at Spring Lake Golf Course, website manager for Troop 229 of the Boy Scouts and is a board member/youth liaison at Setauket United Methodist Church.
I asked Logan who or what has inspired him to work as hard as he does. He stated his parents. He’s seen both of them go through some tough times and both have gotten right back on their feet, never giving up, always taking care of business. He’s described by his teachers as one of the hardest working and most intellectual students of his graduating class. Mr. Perera described Logan as, “the type of student who rises to any challenge, regardless of its difficulty, and succeeds triumphantly, despite any hardships that may impede his progress.” In my own experiences with Logan he’s mature beyond his years, always with a respectful greeting and a smile, no matter how much is piled on his plate.
Logan has applied to Georgetown, Yale, Columbia, Tulane, Marist, Hamilton College, George Washington University, Binghamton, Stony Brook and Geneseo. His final choice? Georgetown, as it has one of the best programs in the country for his chosen major, political science. The plan involves law school followed by breaking into politics. He’s going to run for a local office first, and from there has aspirations to be a U.S. Senator or work for the U.S. Supreme Court.
Logan, we’re so grateful to have a student role model like yourself walking the halls of Newfield. Perhaps in the future we’ll have Senator Ortiz speaking at graduation as opposed to Senator Schumer. Congratulations!
