“All the Pretty Horses” by Cormac McCarthy

In Mrs. Hund’s Tenth Grade CP English Classes, the students were given a list to choose a book from for the fourth marking period. I, as well as Samantha Auker, chose to read the book “All the Pretty Horses” by Cormac McCarthy. This book is definitely an example of the saying, “don’t judge a book by its cover,” because this is nothing what the title or cover suggests it is.

“All the Pretty Horses” is set in 1949. A boy named John Grady Cole and his friend, Rawlins, run away across the border to Mexico looking for work. Along the way they encounter another boy named Jimmy Blevins, who then joins them on their adventure. The three then encounter the Mexican terrain and some citizens, that can sometimes be less than forgiving. After Blevins loses his horse during a thunderstorm, they find the horse in a small village, and steal back the horse.

After losing Blevins to the townspeople, John Grady and Rawlins find work on a horse ranch. While working on the ranch, John Grady falls for the ranchers daughter and the two become very close. While keeping their relationship from everyone, John Grady and Rawlins get sent to a very rough prison, far from the ranch. A few months pass and then someone unexpectedly bails the two out. After John Grady and Rawlins are out of prison, Rawlins goes home and John Grady tries to get his girl back, then everything goes downhill from there.

I  really enjoyed this book and would highly recommend this book to anyone, especially those who like western action mixed with a little bit of romance.
