It’s with pleasure that I introduce to you the Newfield High School Student of the Month for November, Ms. Ally Hu. Ally is currently ranked seventh out of 394. She holds an unweighted GPA of 96.8542 and a weighted GPA of 100.7292. She has the potential to graduate in June with forty-five college credits. In addition, Ally has taken fifteen college and Advanced Placement courses. It’s hard to imagine having time for anything extracurricular, but somehow Ally has made it work. She served as the President during her sophomore and junior years and is currently the president of our G.O. She is President of the Book Club, Executive Officer of the Foreign Language Honor Society, sat on last year’s event committee for Relay for Life and has been, and continues to be, Captain of the Varsity Fencing team. Outside of Newfield she has volunteered 150 hours as a counselor at Middle Country’s Camp Invention at Holbrook Road Elementary School.
I had the pleasure of sitting down with Ally for a little while to learn a little about her. I was grateful she had some time to squeeze me in! I asked her who in her life inspired her to be the motivated young lady she is today. She explained it is her mom who has sacrificed so much for her. Ally stated, “She’s been so present in my life with simple conversations every day after school that mean so much to me.” Ally explained her mother often uses Chinese Proverbs as life lessons. One that sticks out for her is, “Learning is like rowing upstream; not to advance is to drop back.” Mom made it clear that when things get tough, it’s okay to slow down a little, as long as you continue to progress. If you stop, you’ll fall behind, and I couldn’t agree more Mrs. Hu is right on the money!
Ally has 16 colleges and universities she is currently interested in. Among them are USC, UCLA, Stanford, UC Barkley, M.I.T., Boston College and University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Depending on the specifics of programs offered she’s looking to major in computer science or computer engineering.
Ally, with all you’ve accomplished so far, I have no doubt you are destined for greatness. You’re a true role model for so many and an absolute asset to Newfield High School. Keep up the great work that you do. Congratulations on a job well done!
