Each year, students from the music department at East Juniata attend PMEA festivals, where they spend three days learning music intensely with students from other schools in the area. They begin with districts where they audition for regionals. At regionals they can audition for states, and from states they can audition for the all-eastern or even national festivals. In January we sent seven students to District Band at Clearfield Area High School, including Sarah Irvin on tenor saxophone, Sierra Gearhart and Kylie Elsasser on alto saxophone, Sam Karper on tuba, Zach Leitzel on trumpet, Paige Smith on bass clarinet, and Robert Ferry on trombone. Sarah, Kylie, Zach, and Paige advanced to regionals. District Choir was held two weeks later at Bald Eagle Area High School and we sent 10 students, including Emilie Gehrig on soprano I, Margaret Edwards on soprano II, Kylie Elsasser on alto I, Emma Seaman on alto II, Sarah Irvin, Paige Smith, and Clay Leitzel on tenor I, Robert Ferry on bass I, and Nicholas Pillot and Sam Karper on bass II. Everyone scored extremely well and four advanced to regionals, including Emilie, Margaret, Sarah, and Sam. Two weeks later, six students attended district orchestra at Bedford High School, including Margaret Edwards on violin, Paige Smith on clarinet, Robert Ferry on trombone, Zach Leitzel on trumpet, Sarah Irvin on bassoon, and Sammi Ricedorf on percussion. Margaret and Zach advanced to regionals. The regional orchestra festival will not commence until March 22 and we do not yet know if they will advance to states. The week after district orchestra was district jazz. The students who attended were Paige Smith and Sierra Gearhart on alto saxophone, Sarah Irvin on tenor saxophone, Kylie Elsasser on baritone saxophone, Margaret Edwards and Robert Ferry on trombone, and Zach Leitzel, Isaac Austin, and Nicholas Pillot on trumpet. There is no regional jazz festival. In February Margaret Edwards found out that she made it into the PMEA All-State Vocal Jazz festival which will be held in April.
