In both Mrs. Smith and Mr. Shoop’s U.S History classes, a quilt was created to remember some of the victims of the Holocaust. The Holocaust was a horrible time in Europe when Jews and many other races faced great discrimination. A total of around 11 million people were killed during the Holocaust and of that 11 million, 6 million were Jews. These numbers are just an estimation of how many millions of people were killed. There was no reason for the mass killing of all these people and it will be a reminder to all future generations that this should never happen again.
Each of the butterflies on the quilt represent a survivor or victim of the dreadful Holocaust. On each butterfly there is a number representing the age of the person admitted into a concentration camp, and the person’s name in either black or blue, explaining whether they survived or fell victim. There are also four images hand drawn by the students on each butterfly, each color symbol respectively representing the interests and occupations of the person written on the butterfly. The quilt, with all the butterflies put together, pays respect to each of the survivors and victims of the Holocaust, as they should never be forgotten.
