As the 2017-2018 winter season commences, the Newfield boys’ basketball team is eager to make a run for a playoff spot. To get a better look at just how they’re doing, I spoke with Senior Captain Christian Agostino about his thoughts on the team’s season. First, I asked him about his thoughts on the season so far. He told me, “So far, we’ve really been shooting well from beyond the arc. Paul VonVoight, Colin Cassara, Chandler Giovinco, and myself have been shooting exceptionally well. I’d say we’re a top threat in our league from three-point territory. I’d also like to think that we’re explosive. Paul has had many twenty-plus point showings, and I’ve had games where I’ve had fifteen or more points added onto a great showing from Paul.” When asked about how his team works as a unit, Agostino responded, “We gel really well together. Both on and off the court, we get along pretty well just due to the fact that we’ve been playing together year-round and that we have a lot of guys returning. We all have distinct strengths and weaknesses that we can balance out as a team due to the good chemistry we have as a whole.” The team’s interdependence was shown through their twenty-point victory against Hauppauge, but Agostino still believes there are a few things his team could improve on. “We have to play better defense. Right now, we have to rely heavily on zone defense because we have a lot of trouble matching up with our limited size. Defense lies mainly in communicating, and since we’re, for the most part, young, many of the guys are less vocal than they could be. For myself, I need to become more consistent. I have to continue to show up every night and play how I know I’m able to.” Newfield aims to continue their winning season this upcoming Tuesday against Huntington.
