Last school year Mrs. Kerstetter’s art classes were able to participate in making a glass mosaic for the school.
A local artist, Linda Bennett, came to our school with a great idea. She has been making glass mosaics as a profession for years. She also travels all over the state to create mosaics in any place, from a kindergarten classroom to a rehab center. Linda was excited to show us the idea for the mosaic she would create with us because it was something that she had been wanting to try for awhile. She based the design for our mosaic off of the classic comic book format, which is even used by a famous pop-artist, Roy Lichtenstein.
Even though you’re using many small pieces of glass, making mosaics is a lot safer than you may think. Linda brought in many different kinds of beautiful glass pieces to show us and use in our mosaic. She also made sure that we always wore goggles when cutting the glass.
The overall product took at least two weeks. The mosaic was designed so that the word “Think” would be at eye level for students to see themselves in the mirrored glass and be inspired. And that’s what art is all about!
