I'm sure by now in this school year, everybody has walked down the hall and has heard someone say they lack school spirit at least once is their high school career. Is it wrong to lack school spirit? No, not everybody wants their high school years to be as flamboyant as others. Some cannot stand pep rallies, while others look forward to the next one in advanced. However, like the AP English 12 teacher, Mrs. Hund, says, “You get out of this class, what you put into it.” To rephrase it, you get out of high school, what you put into it. Putting in your personal school spirit can brighten your experience which may cause a chain reaction onto others.
One way to encourage school spirit effort is to join in Mr. Shoop’s fiasco of school improvement projects. His Psychology classes have banded together to create a more appealing environment for the fellow students they will leave behind after graduation through multiple student projects. One project is a sculpture of our tiger mascot, of course. The plan is to have it positioned right in front of the library, welcoming in the student body each and every morning. Another project is the class mural. Some students have volunteered to create a name filled canvas of all the seniors so they can look back and remember the handprint they left at East Juniata. Another, the tiger head mural. As it is stated, it will be a tiger head painted on a board, made by willing seniors, and will be hung for the rest of the school to see. The last project in the works is a simple, yet innovative one. Mr. Shoop would like to paint paw prints on the walls. It will start in his room and hopefully, makes it way out. This can be accomplished by the simpleness of handmade stencils.
These projects may be small and not affect some students at all, but for the ones that joined in, it may change their outlook on their last six years, making it all worthwhile.
