In 1973, everything changed. The "Battle of the Sexes" was one of the most watched sporting events ever. Over 90 million people watched Billie Jean King battle Bobby Riggs in a match that was as much about women's rights as it was about tennis.
It was also the beginning of Title IX. “No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.”
King's win is considered a milestone in public acceptance of women's tennis and the beginning of women challenging the status quo everywhere.
Battle of the Sexes is in theaters this week, which chronicles the events that led up to the historic match. It stars Emma Stone as Billie Jean King and Steve Carrell as Bobby Riggs.
