Georgia Tech was the scene of protest on Monday after a mentally ill student, 21-year-old Scott Schultz, was killed by a police officer late Saturday. Georgia Bureau of Investigation spokeswoman Nelly Miles said, "Schultz made the 911 call and described an alleged suspicious person who fit Schultz’s own physical description." The student was shot after an incident that investigators say started when Schultz refused to put down a knife and started advancing on officers. Miles also stated that three suicide notes were found in Schultz’s dorm room.
An emergency alert was issued Monday night by the university shortly after a vigil that was held to honor of Shultz turned violent. This incident highlights the ongoing issue of mental health awareness at college campuses across the country. Read more statistics about mental health awareness for students here.
