Taylor Swift is an artist that has been subject to criticism over the years like all popular musicians are. Starting her career as a country singer, Swift produced four albums that were considered to be quite popular, before deciding to switch her genre to pop music. When this occurred, Swift underwent some changes not only in her music, but her image as well. Her first album, 1989, however, was still about similar themes as her previous music, and Swift still resembled what seemed to be a decent artist. Recently, Swift has come out with a new song titled, “Look What You Made Me Do.” While catchy, this song exemplifies the picture of a bitter irresponsible person.
The title, “Look What You Made Me Do,” begins to tell the listener that you can blame other people for the choices that you, yourself make. This idea continues with the line, “the role you made me play.” Swift is complaining that the person she has become is because of other people. While other people do affect us in everyday life, it is no one’s fault other our own, who we become. This idea teaches her listeners that they aren’t responsible for their own actions and faults because it’s a reaction of how someone else treated them. It’s an idea of they hurt me so now I can be a jerk. That’s not all this song is saying though!
The song continues to share a poor mentality of life. Lyrics like, “I've got a list of names and yours is in red, underlined” and “The world moves on, another day, another drama, drama But not for me, not for me, all I think about is karma” teach the listener that revenge is a ok and going to occur. Swift is saying that she has a list of people she doesn’t like, people who have wronged her, and so now all she thinks about is revenge. This is not the mentality that people should have. Holding on to dislike, and even hatred, is only going to make you a bitter person, and it will change who you are. Unfortunately, this seems to have happened to Swift. Hopefully it never happens to you, because, personally, I think it’s sad when you let the world change you.
