DISTANT MISSION TO SATURN

After nearly 4,500 days spent studying Saturn and its moons, NASA’s Cassini satellite will begin its final mission this November. In 1997, Cassini began a 2.2 billion mile journey towards the icy rings of Saturn and their 53 orbiting moons. The research that followed yielded more than 3,000 reports, including detailed profiles of the lakes of Titan and the ice-geysers of Enceladus. This November’s mission will take Cassini into Saturn’s outermost ring to collect ice samples as well as hi-res images of the planet’s atmosphere. In April 2017, the satellite will aim for Saturn’s innermost ring, and after 22 final orbits, destroy itself with a dive into the planet.

AGREEMENT REACHED ON LIMITS TO HYDROFLUOROCARBONS

Following extended negotiations in Rwanda, more than 100 countries (including the U.S. and China), have reached an agreement to reduce usage of hydrofluorocarbons between 2019 and 2028. Seeing that HFCs are thousands of times more dangerous to Earth’s climate than carbon emissions, many scientists have already expressed discontent with the delayed timetable. Concerns exist that any continued CFC overuse may undermine the positives accomplished during last year’s 195-nation Paris accord. Over the last 10 years, mankind’s usage of HFCs has rapidly escalated as highly populated, developing countries integrate air conditioning into homes, office units and vehicles.

OLYMPIAN TYSON GAY LOSES TEENAGE DAUGHTER TO GUN VIOLENCE

The 15-year-old daughter of Olympic track star Tyson Gay, a standout track athlete herself, was recently killed in Lexington, Kentucky, by a stray bullet fired outside of a local restaurant. Trinity Gay was not involved in the disagreement that sparked the conflict, which led to gunshots between two cars on the scene. Prior to her death, Trinity had posted comments to Twitter referencing gunfire outside the restaurant. A suspect, 21-year-old Dvonta Middlebrooks, has been arrested on charges that include possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Investigations regarding the second car involved in the shooting are ongoing.

17-YEAR-OLD MALE MAKE-UP ARTIST IS COVER GIRL'S NEWEST STAR

American cosmetics company CoverGirl has named 17-year-old high school senior James Charles as its first male spokesperson. Last year, the up-and-coming New York makeup artist rose to Instagram and YouTube stardom after posting his experimental, personal makeup projects online.  As the company’s inaugural CoverBoy, Charles joins the ranks of former company stars like Sofia Vergara, Janelle Monáe, Pink and Katy Perry. As the face of CoverGirl’s “So Lashy!” mascaras, Charles will feature in television and streaming commercials, as well as print and street ads.
