By now we have all seen the devastation that Hurricane Harvey has wrought across Texas. Many families have lost everything and FEMA estimates that rebuilding will take years in the hardest hit areas. Right now many Texans don't have access to the basics like food, shelter, medicine and clothing and it's a big job getting supplies to people in need. We know many of you find that service and charity are an important part of your high school experience, so we want to share some tips on how to help make a difference in the lives of those affected by disasters of this kind.
ProPublica published an article on how to help those in need and the top things to do for before donating to a cause or organization. See below.
>Do research before giving to any group.
>Look for groups with strong local ties to their community. They can sometimes be the best option.
>Demand accountability of the groups you give to.
We love Charity Navigator, which has a complete list of the top organizations that are helping in Texas right now. You can research the different charities and how you can get involved.
