Germany hosted the 2017 G20 Summit and protesters were in a frenzy in Hamburg. The Summit began on July 7th and included some of the world’s boldest political personalities. Among them were Donald Trump (USA), Vladimir Putin (Russia), Recep Tayyip Erdogan (Turkey), and Angela Merkel (Germany).
Much of the Summit was centered on global financial market, North Korea’s latest ICBM test launching, and Trump’s departure from the Paris Climate Agreement.
The G20 itself is an international committee consisting of the world’s top 20 economies, 19 countries and the European Union. Their main objective is to create a stronger global financial system and to make sure that financial markets are effectively regulated. The previous G20 forum took place after the financial epidemic of 2008.
With Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin present, protests were seemingly unavoidable. Hamburg Police Chief Ralf Martin Meyer and the rest of his department prepared for “not just sit-in protests, but massive assaults.” Water cannons were used to disperse protesters. Protestors dressed like zombies to represent the obliviousness of a society that put these leaders in power. Their efforts were accompanied by a German cola advertisement depicting Trump, Putin, and Erdogan asleep with the caption, “Man, wake up!” Only time will tell if people can stay "woke" about these issues.
