Mr. Bogue’s advanced science class is based on engineering; during class, the students get to build contraptions and even do a bit of computer programing themselves. The majority of work in this class is project based with note taking and lecture as an afterthought. In the past, the students built a robot and programmed it to do specific tasks. The class also built a fully functional photo booth, and it was meant to send the pictures that it took to social media sites. Unfortunately, writing a program like that is complicated and it ultimately failed.
Currently, the students are working on a project that involves Rube Goldberg machines; Rube Goldberg means chain reactions. The goal is to make the best Rube Goldberg machine, like a golf ball falling onto a spoon that launches an eraser into the air. Also, the class is working towards having an online textbook that they can use as a resource during class. For their final grade, the students must make their own contraption; it can be from a simple video game to a random machine. There are of course limitations to what the students can make; they cannot make a fully functional gun or bomb. The goal is to be creative as long as you are not making something ridiculous.
