As a lifeguard for three years on the beaches of Long Island I have 10 tips that will provide you with a safe and enjoyable summer
1) Swim between the flags (or other indications of a guarded area) as there are often rip currents, holes, or other issues outside of them, which is why they are there.
2) Do not climb out on the rocks, if you fall you will be a) injured and b) land in a rip current, which form next to the rocks. The current moves quickly even on calm days with no waves.
3) Do not swim beyond where you can stand or your ability level.
4) Swim parallel to shore if caught in a rip current and do not panic.
5) Do not swim at night, there are no lifeguards and this is when most drownings occur.
6 )Do not leave children unattended on the beach or near pools. Ensure all pools have locked gates and enclosures around them.
7) Do not go to the beach if a storm is coming.
8) Pay attention to whistles, they are probably from the lifeguards who notice dangers before you do. The ocean is dynamic and conditions can shift rapidly.
9) Drink enough water. Dehydration is bad, and can cause a serious health risk on very hot days.
- 10) Wear sunblock all the time and reapply each time you exit the water after you fully dry.
Please stay safe and enjoy the beaches when lifeguards are on duty so that you may maximize your summer enjoyment of the beautiful crown jewel of Long Beach, our beautiful beaches! Please do not litter and try to take any trash you see on the beach to the nearest trash container. Remember the lifeguards on your beach are highly trained and are looking out for your health and safety! Thank a lifeguard after you leave the beach!
