This April, ASPIRA organized their annual Culture Collision. It was an exhilarating event with music, decorations and of course -- food! It opened up with dance that incorporated bachata, salsa and merengue. The dances that were performed throughout the entirety of the night were choreographed by Steven Robert who is also an “ASPIRANTE” (a member of ASPIRA). The purpose of the event was to raise awareness for different cultures from Latin America, Asia, North America and more! Asian Culture Club also was a part of the event and served food from their own culture. Ms. Dass stated that the event mandated a chance for people to “celebrate their own culture” It was also an attempt to raise money for scholarships for students from low-income families.
During the event, people who attended were welcome to pick up a plate and grab some food. There were wings, ceviche, rice and more. Drinks cost $1.00 each and admission was $4.00. The event itself was very active and diverse. People could sit down and socialize, eat food or get up and dance. Brian Tenorio, a senior at LBHS, explained “It’s all about diversity and coming together”.
Steven Robert, the individual who choreographed the dances at the beginning and the end of the night, was astonished as to how everyone “really pulled it together” in the short notice they had to learn the dance. Speaking of performances, a special music group came to the event with a whole bundle of talent to share. FREE is a choir for disabled adults who are known to have performed for the former president of the United States.
Overall, the event was a success. ASPIRA was able to raise money and spread awareness for Latin American culture, Asian culture and general awareness for other cultures.
