Mrs. Everett's physics students at Juniata High School were challenged with the task of keeping a raw chicken egg safe when dropped from a 2nd story balcony. Although many of the students had experienced similar challenges in the past, this experience was unique in that the only building materials permitted were paper, file folders, and tape. Furthermore, the students could earn bonus points for building a device that weighed less than the egg. The top prize available was 25 bonus points for successful devices weighing less than 8 grams, which meant that the egg would weigh about 7 times more than the protective device. Achieving this goal requires a solid understanding of energy, forces, and impulse in addition to many hours of engineering.
This year’s winning design weighed 11.6 grams. Congratulations to Cordell Rothrock, Grace Brosius, and Emily Bonson for taking top honors in this year’s contest.
Thanks to Emily Bonson, Bailey Hackenberry, and Josie Rice for video footage.
