Meditation is a powerful activity. This activity is proven to change your state of mind. A group of people at Harvard University conducted a study on Meditation. They found out that meditation rebuilds a major part of the brain’s central nervous system in only eight weeks. Sara Zara, instructor of Psychology at Harvard Medical School, said, “Although the practice of meditation is associated with a sense of peacefulness and physical relaxation, practitioners have long claimed that meditation also provides cognitive and psychological benefits that persist throughout the day. This study demonstrates that changes in brain structure may underlie some of these reported improvements and that people are not just feeling better because they are spending time relaxing.” This is such a powerful statement because it proves that through breathing and relaxing your mind, you can do so many positive things for your body.
As Sara Zara said, it is true that most people who meditate, participate in the activity to feel relaxed. What some of those people do not know is that the process of meditation does so much more than just making you feel relaxed. Meditation can change and reshape your brain as well as improve your quality of life.
Some people think that to meditate you have to be of a certain religion and you have to sit with your legs crossed and hum. Other people think that through the process of meditation, you have to empty your mind, when really you are letting thoughts come and go with no judgment of them or of yourself. These people do not even think of the fact that meditation can change neuronal cell bodies and rebuild your brain.
In conclusion, meditation is one of the many things that you can do to improve your quality of life, so if you do not meditate, you should start now. There are many amazing apps on your phone that will teach you how to meditate. Two of the ones I find most helpful are Headspace and Insight Timer. Good luck, and I hope you enjoy your journey to a more peaceful and improved mind.
