The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones

The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, like so many novels, was also made into a movie, taking place in a present day metropolitan area. It is 10 out of 10 in my opinion. It goes through the story of a young girl, named Clary around the age of 16, whose life changes drastically after she finds out who she really is.

It starts at her house with her normal mom, normal best friend going to a normal party. However, at this party she sees something that no other normal person should have seen. She witnesses a murder. This is the turning point in the book, after this event occurs she begins seeing things that are not actually there according to her best friend Simon. She begins drawing symbols that make no sense to her because she does not know who she truly is. Her whole life has been a lie.

Clary is a shadow hunter. Her family history was not at all, what she thought it was. Her mom had been trying to protect her from the life of shadow hunters so she denied her the truth. With the help of a boy around her age who she barely knew, she discovers the truth of her past and learns more about herself than ever before. Shadow hunters kill demons and creatures of the underworld in order to save the human race and Clary has a special gift to help them.

This book takes you along on her adventures and battles and how she contributes to the unknown and difficult world of shadow hunters. I would definitely recommend reading this book and the rest of the series by Cassandra Clare and maybe even watch the movie.

The series is quite lengthy, consisting of six books. If reading is not really your style, then some of the books, especially the last, might seem quite prodigious and you might not want to give this series a second look. However, the same rules apply here: do not judge a book by its cover and do not judge a book by its size. I’ve known many people who would not normally prefer to read a book than go to the movies but trust me when I say that those same people were some of the first to have this series finished.

I think that the genre of this book has a lot to do with its popularity. It is mainly a fantasy/urban fiction book, but there are many other genres mixed into the plot as well. There is romance between the many characters introduced, adventure, and action. The author also reals you in because of the first person point of view that works very well with this story. She initially starts with the voice of the main character Clary but she keeps it interesting and switches it up a lot so the reader can get into the minds of the other characters as well.
